Jakob Ferrara from Pelham Middle School was last year’s contest winner. The then seventh-grader was awarded first place for his proposal to mandate free Pre-K for all 4-year olds in New York state, giving all students the advantage of early learning. All contest submissions are due by April 1. The students whose proposals are selected will be notified on April 15, with the first-place winner taking a trip to Albany sometime in late May or early June. Interested students need to write an essay (750 words maximum) detailing their proposed idea for a law. There are no limitations on what a student can recommend. Creativity is encouraged. Students can either download the entry form as a PDF or fill it out online. Dear Tuckahoe Community, As previewed in my last letter, at their meeting earlier this week, the Board of Education voted to schedule a public bond vote for April 10, 2018. The community will be asked to consider a $9,987,000 bond to fund a capital project to address the District’s most basic needs for additional classrooms, safety and security upgrades, and high priority infrastructure repairs. Highlights of this plan include: -addition of a second story with eight new classrooms at William E. Cottle School to meet the demands of increased enrollment -construction of a new security vestibule at the William E. Cottle main entrance -Infrastructure priorities such as turf field replacement, renovation of Cottle field, communication system replacements, rekeying, energy system upgrades If passed, the cost of the project for a home with an assessed value of $8,500 would be $254/year. However, due to the retirement of existing debt, the net impact to a homeowner for the project would be close to neutral - approximately $60/year for years 1 and 2 and then cost neutral. Additional opportunities for residents to learn more and ask questions will be communicated shortly. Click here for the capital project section of the TUFSD website. Sincerely, Carl Albano Superintendent of Schools

The BOE will vote at the (regularly scheduled monthly meeting) on Monday, February 12, whether the revised plan should be put up for a public vote. A public vote would take place on APRIL 10th. The importance of an APRIL 10th vote is that if the bond is approved by a majority of Tuckahoe UFSD voters, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) may view the project as an emergency need and could possibly allow the district to begin construction in June 2019, as opposed to waiting until 2020. |
