Please slow down and move over for emergency vehicles. The emergency lights are activated to alert drivers to a preexisting problem in the roadway. In this case the Trooper was out of the vehicle assisting a motorist with an earlier crash. Luckily no one was hurt. We want everyone to get to their destination safely |
New York Move Over Law means drivers MUST use due care when approaching an emergency vehicle or hazard vehicle parked, stopped or standing on or beside the roadway. On parkways or controlled access highways, such due care means drivers must over one lane from the stopped vehicle, when reasonable and safe to do so. (§ 1144.) - only if it is safe to do so – and only if such a move complies with other rules and statutes.
Purpose of the New York Move Over Law
The law exists to provide a safer environment for officers, emergency personnel, and maintenance workers who are stopped along the side of highways. When their vehicles are close to moving traffic, accidents can be prevented by leaving more room for them to operate.
Every year, officers, firefighters and tow truck operators are killed because drivers fail to give them enough room.
The law basically includes all kinds of authorized vehicles performing any kind of duty on or beside the road and is displaying white or colored flashing lights. It applies when the vehicle is stopped on any part of the roadway or any shoulder, not just the shoulder on the right.
Remember, authorized vehicles aren’t just police vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances. The law also includes construction and maintenance vehicles and tow trucks.

The holiday shopping season is here! In an effort to promote local commerce and spread the holiday cheer, the Village of Tuckahoe will be suspending our short term street parking meter enforcement on 𝐒𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐚𝐲𝐬 through Christmas! Tomorrow, Saturday November 30th, “Small business Saturday” will go into effect and all meters covered with holiday bags do not need to paid. Vehicles may occupy spaces for up to two hours free of charge while they shop in our local community. It won’t be hard to spot these meters as they will be at all the business areas throughout the Village. Support your local small businesses and Happy Holidays! |
• Always make sure you ship to a secure location because those dang “porch pirates” are on the loose again.
• Don’t buy from unfamiliar retailers without confirming the company is legit. Usually these type of websites offer deals that are “too good to be true.” Compare prices and pictures of the merchandise at similar websites.
• Never make purchases on public Wi-Fi and if you need too, consider installing and using a VPN- Virtual Private Network. This creates an encrypted connections between you phone/computer and the VPR server.
• Use strong passwords with a complex set of at least 10 lowercase and uppercase numbers, letters, and symbols.
• always use a credit card when making online purchases as you will get the best liability as most major credit cards offer $0 liability for fraudulent purchases. Also never save credit card information on the site.
• Check your statements for fraudulent charges at least once a week during the holiday season or set up account alerts.
