9/11: Serve + Remember event is an annual community-wide day of service dedicated to honoring the memory of those lost on September 11, 2001 through volunteer service (see 911day.org to learn more about the national movement). Over the last 9 years Volunteer New York! has worked with Westchester County to inspire, mobilize and unite thousands of volunteers in service in tribute to those lost, the families of those lost, and the volunteer heroes who responded in the wake of this unprecedented tragedy that occurred only miles from our community. Just last year on September 11, 2018 over 1,000 local volunteers of all ages gave their time to help others and address community needs, support local charities, and in turn, helped turn tragedy into a national day of doing good. How will you volunteer on Sept. 11?

Surprisingly, so few people are aware of the struggle some of their neighbors face just to meet the basic need of diapering their babies. You can help these families by donating diapers of all sizes, types, and brands – newborn to toddlers. Please note, however, that the greater need is for the larger sizes (5 and 6; and pull-ups). Open packages accepted. Additionally, the Diaper Bank always needs wipes, so please send some along with - or without - diapers. There is free parking for volunteers at the Westchester County Center. Let the parking attendant know you are there to volunteer for the 9/11 event. There is no need to sign up for this drive - you can just come by to donate. This project is a part of 9/11: Serve + Remember. White Plains, NY 9/11/19 12:00 PM Courtney's Tie Drive Staff Sgt. Courtney A. Hollinsworth was one of many Yonkers veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Yonkers resident Staff Sgt. Courtney A. Hollinsworth, born October 18, 1980, attended Yonkers Public Schools and was an active member of his community and church. Shortly after graduation, Hollinsworth enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 17. While in the service, he moved up the ranks and served in several tours of duty while earning various awards and commendations. Hollinsworth’s last tour in 2007 to Baghdad, Iraq resulted in his death on September 9, 2007. His mother, Hope Hollinsworth Coaxum, has worked tireless in making sure the memory of her son lives on. Amongst other charitable work devoted to Veterans in her role as President of the Gold Star Mothers of the Yonkers Chapter, in 2018 she partnered with the City of Yonkers, The Department of Veterans Services and the New York State Division of Veteran Services in collecting new ties in honor of her son, Courtney. One hundred and fifty brand new ties were distributed to Veterans during the 9th Annual Complimentary breakfast recognizing Veterans contributions and in remembrance of those who served. White Plains, NY 9/11/19 12:00 PM Drive to Donate New Socks and Underwear for Children in Need Underwear and socks are a basic necessity, something we put on each morning as we prepare for the day. They are a daily essential yet, unfortunately, for many children in Westchester a luxury their families struggle to provide. Over 60,000 Westchester children live in low-income homes, with 36% of public school children qualify for free or reduced price lunch. For these children, new underwear and new socks are often financially out of reach. Please help The Sharing Shelf provide these critical items to the 3,000 children and teens we serve each year. A week's worth of underwear - or 7 pairs - averages about $10 at the local discount store. Your donation will not only help children feel good, it will meet a human need in our community. We need underwear in all sizes, from 3T through Adult (teen) XL and socks from infant through adult. There is free parking for volunteers at the Westchester County Center.
