PUBLIC NOTICE REGARDING ELECTIC SCOOTERS AND BICYCLES
Over the past several months we have seen a significant increase in the operation of electric powered scooters and bicycles within the town. The majority of the time they are being operated by minors under the age of sixteen. The New York Vehicle and Traffic Law prohibits the following:
The operation of electric scooters and bicycles by those under the age of sixteen, on public sidewalks and without the required safety equipment is dangerous for the scooter operator, passengers, pedestrians and drivers. Due to increased complaints, improper and illegal operation and several accidents our department will significantly increase our enforcement of the Vehicle and Traffic law regarding electric scooters and bicycles. We are asking for a concerted effort from parents and guardians ensuring that their children are not operating electric scooters or bicycles in violation of the Vehicle and Traffic Law. We are giving notice that going forward the operation of scooters by those under the age of sixteen or other violations of the Law may result in a fine and/or the scooter or bicycle may be impounded. Impounded scooters or bicycles will only be released to a parent or guardian by appointment. Our goal as always is to encourage voluntary compliance with the law, and to ensure a safe environment for operators, pedestrians and drivers. Chief Joseph Rodriguez

Enforcement is badly needed. I have personally witnessed a few near accidents involving minors riding scooters without helmets. It is just a matter of time before we have a tragedy.
